I'm a longtime user of Instant Messaging tools to keep contact with coworkers, friends, family, etc. They're especially useful in a geographically disperse workplace situation, when email is just too slow and lacks the needed interactivity, and the telephone requires you to detach at least one hand from the keyboard.

To be clear, those tools are allowed at my current workplace: indeed, my boss uses ICQ and he was happy to see me use it. The problem is, I dispise the official ICQ software, as it is slow, clunky, not too much configurable, and doesn't save chat logs in a textual format (I hold some past chat logs among my dearest memories). Trillian is my chat client of choice, and is really the other side of the coin: fast, configurable, logs in textual format, etc. Problem is, ICQ is able to connect thru the Squid proxy at work, while Trillian isn't. I haven't been able to find a solution in the Trillian forums, I think it must be a limitation of Trillian but I haven't enough information to report it to the developers.

To be honest, using the Mirabilis ICQ client on this portable with the French keyboard I'm like at 40% of my usual speed and ease. Anyone with a solution, or a suggestion?

Update: Looks like there's no chance... the Trillian Pro tech specs say that there is no real HTTP proxy support in the Pro version, and therefore I think it's safe to assume that the free version doesn't have it. So either I find a SOCKS 4/5 proxy or I change client for good.

Update 2: Thanks to Mythic who prompted me to try Miranda again, I don't know why the first time it didn't work for me. Only thing, apparently it needs a plugin to export the logs in textual format, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Why don't you use Miranda? It's powerful and it has the same feeling of Trillian but with more functions. Bye, Ettore.

And I discovered a giant bug in my blog software... A comment gets orphaned from its parent post if the latter is updated, so that's the reason for the loss of Mythic's comment.
